A Verse Never Stands Alone
Most misunderstandings of the Bible come from reading a verse apart from its setting. Context is the safeguard that keeps interpretation honest.
Three Kinds of Context
Historical context
Who wrote the passage, when, and to whom? What was happening in their world?
Literary context
What comes before and after? Is the passage narrative, poetry, law, prophecy, or a letter?
Biblical context
How does this passage fit within the whole of Scripture and its central message about Christ?
"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness."
2 Timothy 3:16
A Habit Worth Building
Before drawing a conclusion from any verse, read the whole chapter. That single habit will prevent most interpretive mistakes.
